What creative wisdom waits for you in this deeper, darker season? Join me for a writing workshop to connect with the rich energy of this time. Let's bring 2017 to a creative close... with more heat in our voice, our imagination, and our pages. Each week, I'll share writing prompts, creative practices, and more kindling for your writing. Whether you've written for a long time or want to get started, Winter Fires will warm up your instincts on the page and beyond the page. We'll explore ways to:

Find the kindling of your stories and discover memories, ideas, and questions that generate heat for you

Stoke your unique voice and trust your instinct, so that your creative sparks get more room to breathe and grow

You bring your empty page. I'll help you fill it,
using your own instincts and in your own voice.

How the Writing Journey Works

This is an online writing experience that's open to you, wherever you are in the world. You'll write in the comfort of your own space, on your own schedule. No time zones to worry about, and no in-person sessions to attend. Because the materials are downloaded, you can keep working with them as long as you'd like. You can always come back to prompts, save an exercise for later, or revisit the recordings when you need a spark of inspiration.

A new session of Winter Fires begins on Monday, November 6, 2017. That day, you'll receive materials for the first week of your five-week writing journey. Once a week for five weeks, you'll receive the following by email:

  • Guided writing practice and invitation to the page, delivered as a recorded message. Think of this as your creative grounding for the week. I'll help you get ready to face the blank page, and the guidance will build from week to week. Throughout the journey, we'll work to trust our creative instincts more and move deeper into the writing. You'll receive nearly one hour of guided messages over the course of the workshop, which you can download and replay whenever your writing needs a new spark.

  • 10 writing prompts and one creative practice for the week, delivered as a printable guide (PDF). These will build on the recorded practice and help you get new words on the page. All experience levels and forms of writing are welcomed. Whether you want to write poetry, essays, short stories, or even a journal entry or letter to a loved one, the prompts will support you. As we journey together, I'll share some ways to adapt prompts if you're interested in a particular form or a new challenge in your writing. Over the course of the workshop, you'll receive 50 writing prompts and five practices to dig deeper into your creative life.

  • Links to readings and resources, selected for this writing journey. These will be a mix of practical writing resources as well as reflective tools or readings to feed your creative spirit. I'll also share poetry, essays, and other writings to feed your growing creative fire.

Please note: Refunds are not available for this writing journey, but the good news
is that you'll be able to download the materials. So if you sign up and your plans change,
you can download the recordings, prompts, and readings for use at a later date.

Common Questions about Winter Fires

What if I wrote with Winter Fires last year?
I'm so grateful to the many folks who joined me for this workshop previously. I'm offering the same workshop again this year and look forward to welcoming new writers around the fire. While I'll be adding some new readings and resources this year, the heart of the workshop (i.e., the majority of the prompts and recordings) will be the same. Please stay tuned for more online offerings for folks who have already been a part of this workshop!

When you say "tuned to the season," do you mean the earth's season or a holiday season?
Some of us may attach winter and the end of the year to a holiday (and that can come through in your own writing with Winter Fires!), but the prompts, messages, and practices I share do not reference holidays. My invitation is to the unique creative energy of winter, which is often quieter, colder, and darker in many parts of the world. It may seem like a better time to hibernate than create, but I believe dark nights and cold mornings rile our creative senses in a good way. That's the energy I hope to help you find in Winter Fires.

Are there any live writing sessions or other kinds of support?
Winter Fires is designed to help you dig deeply into your individual writing journey, at your own pace and in the comfort of wherever you most like to write. It does not include live/virtual writing sessions or group writing sessions. I'm available by email throughout the five-week journey, so if you have questions, hit a block along the way, or want to share the joy of the process, I would love to hear from you! While the workshop is delivered by email as downloadable materials, it is not without the human touch... I'm here for each writer (writing with the prompts just as you do!) and invite feedback and questions throughout our time together.
